Life as I know it… plus commentary

There is no God…

with one comment

That’s what some London buses are saying after atheists put up money to buy bus ads.

I’m all for people being free to express their opinions.  I even like opinions that disagree with mine.  On a regular basis.  (Kyle).  But atheists are a mystery to me.

Religious people believe in something.  This belief leads to the myriads statements, books, even ads, shirts and WWJD bracelets.  Atheists though, don’t believe in anything and yet they  seem fairly well organized and vocal, especially for a group that really has no leadership to it.  Maybe that’s the case…  maybe real atheists just quietly go about their lives, not believeing in anything and not really saying much.

The other atheists though, who aren’t merely atheist, but anti-religion are the ones with the belief set and therefore have a platform and agenda.   That seems like a lot of energy spent on saying I don’t believe in something.

  1. Your point about atheists lacking leadership is well taken. But I think this particular campaign is headed by Richard Dawkins — or at least he’s a big contributor.

I would take issue (surprise!) with the repeated statement that “Atheists don’t believe in anything.” It’s not that they don’t believe in anything — they just don’t believe in God.

The atheists represented by these ads probably believe that religious people should stop fighting and killing each other, and that people should be free to enjoy their lives without undue religious stress. That’s a fair belief. (Though one I would (surprise!) disagree with.)

And I know Dawkins and his followers believe that atheists are discriminated against in society in general.
