Facebooks ads and NFL IQs

with 6 comments

Facebook just showed me an ad that said that NFL IQ averages 82.  That’s pretty insulting but I guess they’re looking for clicks.

What's that girl with glasses doing in here?

I wondered if anyone had done any actual work on the topic and came across this interesting ESPN article.  They don’t use IQ, they use a test called the (unfortunately named) Wonderlic test.  This test is given to kids at the annual combine where NFL hopefuls are weighed, measured and graded.  Apparently, the rule is this:  the closer you are to the ball, the higher your IQ.  Average on the Wonderlic scale is 20 (I just like saying Wonderlic) and as it turns out, the average NFL applicant score is 21, same as most other applicants.

Real life 1, Facebook ads 0.

And if you’re interested, here are the average scores by position…

This assessment roughly corresponds to the averages revealed, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, by an NFL personnel man in Paul Zimmerman’s “The New Thinking man’s Guide to Pro Football,” which are:

Offensive tackles: 26
Centers: 25
Quarterbacks: 24
Guards: 23
Tight Ends: 22
Safeties: 19
Middle linebackers: 19
Cornerbacks: 18
Wide receivers: 17
Fullbacks: 17
Halfbacks: 16

The average scores in other professions look like this:

Chemist: 31
Programmer: 29
Newswriter: 26
Sales: 24
Bank teller: 22
Clerical Worker: 21
Security Guard: 17
Warehouse: 15

For those curious among you, Dustin played QB and Kyle played WR in our Fuller flag football league and I was the center.

By the way, this is the real caption to that picture:
Texas’ first-class football academic center is among the highlights in the Moncrief-Neuhaus Athletic Center. The 2,500-square-foot facility provides the finest environment for each and every athlete to prepare for efforts in the classroom. The academic center houses office space for two full-time academic counselors, four tutor rooms, numerous meeting rooms and a multi-purpose study hall facility that seats more than 150 student-athletes. It also features 36 individual computer workstations with Internet access.

CSUF gave us a computer lab in the basement of the admin building.  Sometimes the tech would load more paper for us.

  1. I probably should never comment when I’m tired, but I just visited our alma mater recently, and I must say, their computer labs now rock and their gym is awesome. My friend and I were shellshocked considering that we didn’t get jack during our time there! 🙂

  2. Maybe Facebook tested them after years of crashing their skulls into one another–THAT would be an interesting test result!

  3. I think the only known video footage of our games shows the following:
    QB – Kyle
    Receiver – Arnold
    Soundtrack – ZZ Top

    All’s I’m sayin’.

  4. And who scores a TD in that?

  5. The dumb receiver.
(Hey, do you still have that video? There was a slow motion flag pull in it that I need to preserve for posterity.)

  6. I have everything. If it’s not handy, then it’s down in the media archive room past the conference room.
