Life as I know it… plus commentary

Oh What a Difference a Day Makes (or a couple).

Simple question.  I really want to know.  What in the world is happening with the Republican party?  Check these quotes from Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele from over the weekend.

2/28/09  “Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. Rush Limbaugh — his whole thing is entertainment. He has this incendiary — yes, it’s ugly.”

3/2/09  “My intent was not to go after Rush – I have enormous respect for Rush Limbaugh.  I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. … There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership.”

Sounds like someone woke up with a horse head in his bed. 🙂

To me this seems fairly simple what’s happening here.  The Republican Party has a new face and it’s red faced, bellicose and divisive.  Still, it’s sad to see the Republican party continue to get more and more internal and inward and exclusive until it becomes irrelevant as a political voice in this country.

  1. Do you think that the Republican Party will implode before it reconstitutes itself? I have to keep reminding myself that there are a large number of perople who support them and think that the President is a socialist or worse?

    • Well, there’s not. In kind of broad terms, the country is about 25%-33% conservative, 25%-33% liberal and 50%/33% in the middle. The way the Republican Party is regrouping is by appealing to the base who are already committed party members by towing an increasingly more and more conservative line. This excites the (already committed) base and pushes away the conservative side of the middle. It’s not a good strategy for the Republicans.

  2. I hope you are right. Living in a basically Democratic city in a Deomcratic state, I only have a few Republicans I can talk to and they don’t like what is going on in their party.

  3. Perhaps you’ll find this week’s posts by brotherthree on lehmanbrothers.wordpress worth your while. They’re not all about Rush. It’s more that we can’t separate Rush from the disinformation machines at work today.

  4. Great point. I was just reading that some Democratic strategists have been seeing how intensely disliked Rush Limbaugh is and have purposefully tied him to the Republicans.

I checked you your blog. It’s dense! I’m going to spend more time on it this weekend.
